What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow notch or gap between the tips of an airplane’s wings that helps maintain airflow and reduce drag.

The word slot can also refer to:

A machine in which a player inserts coins or paper tickets and presses a button or lever to spin a series of reels with pictures printed on them. If the symbols line up in a winning combination, the player receives a payout. The amounts vary, from small wins that recoup some of the player’s investment to jackpot prizes that can reach into the millions. Modern machines have microprocessors that randomly assign numbers and symbols to each of the reels. The number of reels, the symbols, and the size of the payouts are usually displayed on the machine’s pay table or help screen. Some machines have fixed pay lines that are always active; others allow the player to choose which of several pay lines they want to activate for each spin.
